A Short Warm up: Pickleball Exercises for Seniors

Pickleball! Who's playing it?? It's a new-ish sport that's really taken hold and attracted a swath of people, mainly people 50 and older. That's awesome. Finding a sport that's easy to get into, immediately fun and promotes physical activity in a community setting is a win-win-win.

Use it or Lose it

Here’s the thing. If you haven't been jumping around in a few years, moving your feet quickly in all directions, or practicing reacting quickly, you might want to start training your lower legs as you get into the sport. I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase, “Use it or lose it.” That’s precisely what happens to our ability to move quickly, including running and jumping. If we don’t actively train our muscles and tendons to jump, we will lose the muscular capacity and the neurological capacity to do so. Even if it’s only been a couple of years, getting yourself back in jumping shape will be crucial to mitigating injury while playing.

Get Prepared

I created a 10 minute video of pickleball exercises for seniors or anyone who’s playing. It’s a great warm up, focused on getting your feet moving quickly and reactively underneath you. While it’s only the tip of the iceberg it's a great way to start. While this video is intended to be a warm up, it’s an excellent training tool at any time.
